About Us

Appleby Training and Heritage Centre Limited was originally set up in 1996 to convert a decaying Midland Railway goods shed, set just outside Appleby Railway Station alongside the Settle-Carlisle Railway, into a workshop for restoring heritage vehicles whilst providing local employment, training in traditional skills and providing a much needed workshop in East Cumbria.  For many years the Centre provided a high quality service to many railway museums by converting and upgrading old carriages, locomotives and so on.  Unfortunately, as this was so labour intensive and therefore not cost effective a decision was made around 2010 to cease this type of work.

In 2019, Appleby Training and Heritage Centre`s main focus is providing excellent training to people of all ages in a range of accredited and non-accredited courses. The Centre is able to provide training in areas as diverse as Upholstery to Motor Vehicle Maintenance.  Our learners vary in age from 15 years to over 70 years and we hope to be able to provide a positive and productive learning experience for each and every one of our learners.

This year we have been approved to provide their own apprenticeships! We can offer apprenticeships in Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Business Administration and Supporting Teaching and Learning.  In the near future we are hoping to expand the range of courses we can offer here so keep a look out! For more information regarding apprenticeships please click here.

For many years our Centre has also worked with Cumbria County Council`s Community Learning and Skills Department to provide a wide range of accredited and skills  (leading to a recognised qualification) courses as well as a range of leisure courses for adult learners. Currently the Centre offers GCSE English and Mathematics courses, with students enrolling in September each year. We are able to offer a diverse and extensive range of vocational qualifications from Customer Service to  Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools. Our leisure courses cover skills such as welding, plastering and rendering, machining in a workshop, upholstery, make a lampshade, photography, art and cookery classes. We also run regular Saturday workshops throughout the year where the focus is on being able to produce something to take home in a day. We aim to provide an exciting and stimulating range of courses and we are always willing to look to offer something new if you have a particular interest.

The Centre is also able to provide a range of specialist courses such as First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid, Manual Handling, Emergency First Aid, COSHH and Food safety. We employ experts in each field to deliver each of these courses. Courses are run to suit the needs of local individuals and businesses, they can be delivered at your own work premises if this is more convenient.

Appleby Training and Heritage Centre is a registered charity, governed by a board of trustees, all of whom offer their time and skills on a voluntary basis.  The centre employs a Centre Manager who reports directly to the Board of Trustees. The trustees normally meet 6 times per year and hold their Annual General Meeting in November or early December each year.

Appleby Training and Heritage Centre aims to meet the needs of its local community, we need your support and ideas to help us move forward.
